Background of the Study
Workplace ethics constitute the moral guidelines and professional standards that govern behavior in organizational settings. Religious education, with its emphasis on ethical conduct and moral responsibility, can have a profound influence on shaping these attitudes among young learners. In Kano Municipal LGA, Kano State, secondary schools integrate religious teachings that promote values such as honesty, diligence, and fairness, which are essential for fostering sound workplace ethics. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a moral compass that will guide their future professional conduct and personal interactions (Mustapha, 2023). Educational theorists argue that early exposure to ethical teachings through religious education lays a strong foundation for professional integrity and accountability (Abdullahi, 2024). In Kano Municipal, where the interplay between tradition and modernity often shapes social norms, religious education serves as a crucial mechanism for reinforcing values that transcend the boundaries of the classroom. Through lectures, discussions, and real-life case studies, students are encouraged to critically evaluate ethical dilemmas and develop a principled approach to decision-making. This approach is intended to equip them with the ability to navigate complex ethical challenges in the workplace and contribute positively to the organizational culture (Garba, 2025). However, the translation of classroom learning into practical workplace ethics remains a challenge, as students face external pressures and competing value systems once they enter the job market. This study seeks to examine how religious education influences students’ attitudes towards workplace ethics by analyzing curricular content, teaching methodologies, and the broader socio-cultural context of Kano Municipal LGA. The research will explore whether religious teachings effectively instill ethical values that persist beyond the academic environment, and how these values impact students’ future professional conduct. The outcomes of this study are expected to offer valuable insights into how religious education can be optimized to better prepare students for the ethical challenges of the workplace, ultimately contributing to improved professional standards and social responsibility (Abdullahi, 2024; Garba, 2025; Mustapha, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the incorporation of religious education aimed at promoting workplace ethics, there remains a significant gap between the ethical ideals taught in secondary schools and the ethical practices observed in professional settings among graduates from Kano Municipal LGA. While the curriculum emphasizes values such as honesty, fairness, and accountability, anecdotal evidence suggests that these ideals are not consistently reflected in workplace behaviors. This discrepancy raises concerns about the effectiveness of religious education in bridging the gap between theoretical ethical instruction and practical application in the workplace. Contributing factors include variations in teacher competence, inadequate integration of real-life ethical dilemmas into the curriculum, and the influence of external pressures that challenge these values. Moreover, the lack of continuous reinforcement of ethical teachings after graduation further undermines the intended impact of religious education on workplace ethics. The study aims to investigate these challenges by examining how well religious education prepares students to handle ethical issues in professional environments and identifying the factors that hinder the effective translation of classroom learning into practical behavior. Addressing these challenges is critical for ensuring that the values imparted through religious education become enduring principles that guide professional conduct and enhance workplace integrity (Ibrahim, 2023; Sani, 2024; Garba, 2025).
